GFRC providing relief for 8,000 families

In the 2012/2013 financial year, Geelong Food Relief Centre provided emergency relief food to almost 8,000 families, equating to 165,144 kg of food.

Contributing 253,720 meals for families and individuals in our community.

The mini-mart in North Geelong provides those in need, a place to shop with dignity, and the ability to chose for themselves from a wide range of perishable and non-perishable items.  Clients are able to access vouchers to use at the Centre, free of charge from local Welfare Agencies and Churches.

The Point System of food distribution provides more than double value when compared to traditional food suppliers and ensures fruit and vegetables are always available at the lowest point value to encourage healthy eating.

Give Where You Live support the Centre in two important ways.

  • The $30,000 grant received this year will keep the Food Rescue vans on the road, and help meet the rental for the warehouse and minimart.

Geelong Food Relief Centre rely heavily on their vans every day to collect donated food from food businesses in and around Geelong.

This food in bought back to the warehouse, sorted, packed and put out for clients every morning.

  • Secondly, by distributing $50,000 worth of Emergency Food Relief vouchers to Welfare Agencies to pass on to those in need.

It is not hard to see the difference this support, and that from the Geelong community makes, day in, day out at the Centre.

From young to old, and in between, there are many words of thanks and relief as people leave with full bags of food, and often a hand out to the car by one of the volunteers.  All assessments are done before visiting the Centre, ensuring the clients complete privacy.

Geelong Food Relief mini-mart and warehouse is at 8 Freedman Street, North Geelong and open Monday to Friday between 10am and 3pm.  Visitors are always welcome.
